Lineages : Curated by Greta Bertram & Chloe Akera

Curated by Greta Bertram and Chloe Akera

No maker stands in isolation: skills are learned, and skills are passed on; traditions are inherited, and transmitted to future generations. Makers respond to what has gone before, to the world around them, and to the future. Lineages will explore some of the threads which run through the Crafts Study Centre’s collections, connecting makers and their practices, past and present.

The exhibition will be presented in two stages:

29 August 2023 to 24 February 2024: Textiles and Wood

7 March to 17 August 2024: Ceramics and Lettering

Mary Farmer: A Life in Tapestry

Mary Farmer: A Life in Tapestry

From the late 1960s to the 1990s Mary Farmer was at the forefront of radical textile art, creating striking, abstract tapestries. She was fascinated by the subtle surface textures and depth of colour achieved by working in wool and looked to create what she called ‘a single clear statement’ in her pieces. This exhibition provides a rare opportunity to explore Mary Farmer’s work and comprises nine tapestries from her estate and one further piece from the Centre’s own collections. The exhibition celebrates the donation of the Mary Farmer archive to the Crafts Study Centre.

Neil Brownsword: Obsolescence and Renewal

This exhibition is the latest of artist Neil Brownsword’s investigations into the marginalised histories of North Staffordshire, focusing on its early industrial growth. A combination of digital imagery, 3D-printed objects, large-scale tapestries, slip cast objects and museum artefacts, the exhibition explores how materials and techniques familiar to one medium are applied to another, and the material slippages, technological innovation and subversion that result. His ‘copies without originals’ reconnect audiences to innovations of an obscured industrial past that remain significant to the cultural identity of North Staffordshire and the nation’s ceramic history at large. Supported by Arts Council and Staffordshire University.

PAUL GREENHALGH : THE WEIGHT OF BEING: THOUGHTS FROM THE CERAMIC PAST

Paul Greenhalgh is a historian, writer and curator. His previous roles include Director of the Sainsbury Centre (UK), Director and President of the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington DC), President of NSCAD University (Canada), and Head of Research at the V&A Museum. In this lecture on ceramics past, Greenhalgh asks how ceramic artists of the past thought about their practice? How did they position their practice in their respective cultures? And how does this impact contemporary ceramic? This lecture will explore the underlying nature of ceramic history, arguing that it is a ‘thing in itself,’ rather than a branch of art history. The lecture will look at the theoretical and empirical characteristics of the ceramic past, to identify what makes it relevant today.

Exhibition: HelloGoodbye : myredthread

Since 1995 Lesley Millar, Professor of Textile Culture and Director of the International Textile Research Centre at UCA, has been working with textile artists and designers from across the world, particularly in Japan. Over this period she has accumulated a small, but very choice, collection of contemporary textile works. Now, as Lesley will be retiring in 2023 from UCA, these textiles will be exhibited for the first time as a way of saying "Hello" to the next phase of textile research at UCA and the Crafts Study Centre. It is also "Goodbye" after a long, and extremely happy, association with the University reaching back to 1986, and therefore she will also include work in the exhibition from some of her highly esteemed colleagues.

Professor Lesley Millar will give two informal talks within the HelloGoodbye exhibition.

The events are free but booking is essential as spaces will be limited.

Conference: Tradition/Innovation: Craft and future intangible cultural heritage

Acknowledging that craft practice is often placed within the context of the past, when time was taken to make an object by hand, we will build on this deep relationship between craft and Intangible Cultural Heritage. However, the intention is not to repeat what has gone before. The debate will reflect on the value of past practice through the rediscovery of its future potentials. We wish to create a climate for the resurgence and acknowledgement of the essential importance of Intangible Cultural Heritage as a valuable expression of identity and economic propositions.

The focus of the conference is on the live connectivity between Intangible Cultural Heritage and contemporary craft practice. Our speakers are drawn from an international community of contemporary makers, curators, writers, historians, academics and funders - all of whom recognize the centrality of craft in human growth and development.

Hosted by West Dean College of Arts and Conservation, with the Crafts Study Centre and University for the Creative Art.

EXHIBITION: Rezia Wahid: dancing in the womb

EXHIBITION: Rezia Wahid: dancing in the womb

dancing in the womb presents a collection of woven lengths inspired by what Wahid felt, saw and collected during her pregnancies and motherhood. The multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary qualities of Wahid’s weavings thread her experiences as a woman, poet, teacher, artist, wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend; she weaves textiles that transcend the practical boundaries of art. To truly appreciate Wahid’s genius, one must follow the yarns of identity and memory rich with poetry, tales of love, courage, maternal instinct, and feminine defiance that run through her work.

EXHIBITION: Making Drawing: a creative collaboration
Nov

to Dec 17

EXHIBITION: Making Drawing: a creative collaboration

This exhibition investigates the relationship between drawing and making through collaboration. Inspired by a conversation between a student and tutor at UCA, the idea for this project is simple. What would happen if artists exchanged drawings and then reinterpreted each other’s drawings in three dimensions, using ceramics or glass? At the heart of this project are two questions: how does drawing inform making, and how can collaboration enrich practice?

The idea has evolved into a project between ten students and tutors on the Ceramics and Glass Masters at UCA who all demonstrate a strong relationship between drawing and making within their practice.

This exhibition will show the drawings alongside the objects they inspired through collaboration.

The artists involved are Ana Maria Lopes, Anda Albu, Ashley Howard, Christina Dembinska, Jess Skelton, Lisa Ghiggini, Nicholas Lees, Pat Small, Paul Wheeler, Zillah Puri.

In this exhibition, Odundo presents her vessels and drawings alongside works she has selected from the Crafts Study Centre’s collections. The presentation offers a means of inquiry, dialogue and deep personal conversation.

The exhibition is dedicated to Professor Simon Olding for his guidance, mentorship and friendship.

RICHARD McVETIS: SHAPED BY TIME

RICHARD McVETIS: SHAPED BY TIME

Richard McVetis describes his work as ‘an endless exploration, not just of form but of the reclamation and potential of process and repetition – a step-by-step examination of perspective and scale which unearths the human condition’. A range of materials are used through his labour-intensive process which uses hand-embroidery to record time through multiples of dots, lines and crosses.

Selected works explore the mapping of space and marking of time as a central theme. Variations Of A Stitched Cube, a series of hand-embroidered cubes based on the composite number sixty and the systems in which we measure time. The cubes show time, an ever-present invisible force, through form as both logical and playful. Defined by their materials and created through the random process of embroidery and the action of the hand, generating variations with self-imposed restrictions to imply and manifest the passage of time.

McVetis was a finalist in the 2018 Loewe Craft Prize and has exhibited his work internationally. He is a member of the renowned 62 Group of Textile Artists.

Shaped by Time has been receiving some wonderful reviews in the press. Here are a few we thought we would share:

LINDA BRASSINGTON : CRAFTING FUTURES

LINDA BRASSINGTON : CRAFTING FUTURES

This small exhibition presents recent work by textile artist Linda Brassington. Her material research and outcome on cloth are the result of the Crafting Futures cultural exchange project supported by the British Council. This initiative has been realised by the Crafts Study Centre and the International Textile Research Centre at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham in collaboration with Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in Georgia.

Linda Brassington's finished works, supported by a visual record of her exploratory research and working methods, tell a story of thinking and making. The presentation of work in the Crafts Study Centre is a cameo of cultural influence. It is a reflection of Georgian material heritage reimagined in Brassington's creative practice - an expression of craft history in contemporary textiles.
